More to come.

ROMANIA

<span style="background-color: #f2f3f5; color: #0e1227; font-family: Inter, Roboto, "Segoe UI", Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Beekeeping in Romania is a growing industry, but it faces many challenges. One of the biggest problems is a lack of resources and capital to invest in the necessary equipment for successful beekeeping. Another issue is the prevalence of pests and diseases that can cause harm to bee colonies, such as Varroa mites and American Foulbrood. In addition, climate change has caused some regions to become less suitable for beekeeping due to extreme weather conditions or lack of resources like water or food sources for bees.
Fortunately, there are solutions available to address these issues. It may be beneficial for farmers and beekeepers in Romania to participate in government-funded programs that provide resources and training on best practices for managing bees. Additionally, they should focus on developing sustainable methods of raising bees by investing in more efficient equipment such as hives with better insulation or automated feeding systems that help maintain healthy colonies over time. Finally, farmers should make sure they keep up with current research on pests and diseases so they can take appropriate measures when necessary.

<span style="background-color: #f2f3f5; color: #0e1227; font-family: Inter, Roboto, "Segoe UI", Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">In order to ensure the success of beekeeping in Romania, it is important for farmers and beekeepers to work together as a community. They should share information on best practices and help each other by providing resources or supplies when needed. This kind of cooperation can help to reduce the cost of production and make sure that everyone has access to the necessary tools and techniques for successful beekeeping. Additionally, they should consider forming associations or groups that can provide support and advice on a local level.

<span style="background-color: #f2f3f5; color: #0e1227; font-family: Inter, Roboto, "Segoe UI", Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">When it comes to beekeeping in Romania, there are several types of hives that can be used. The most common type is the Langstroth hive, which is an open-frame design with removable honeycomb frames. This type of hive offers good ventilation and easy access for beekeepers to inspect the health of their bees. Another popular option is a top-bar hive, which has a single long frame that allows bees to build their comb downwards into the box. These hives are more natural for bees and may require less maintenance than Langstroth hives. Finally, some beekeepers in Romania use Warre or vertical top-bar hives, which offer more space for bees and require less frequent inspections from beekeepers. <span style="background-color: #f2f3f5; color: #0e1227; font-family: Inter, Roboto, "Segoe UI", Tahoma, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Generally, Langstroth hives are the most expensive option, with prices ranging from 500 to 1,500 Romanian lei (RON) per hive. Top-bar hives tend to be less expensive, with prices ranging from 100 to 400 RON per hive. Warre or vertical top-bar hives are typically the least expensive option, costing between 50 and 200 RON per hive.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-36595073980338930732018-01-28T09:16:00.001-05:002018-01-28T10:04:06.034-05:00Creating a bee hive journal to improve results

It is man's doom that each person and usually each generation ignores a common fact. Man repeats history. This why military strategists study past battles and wars, it the learning of what went right and what went wrong we learn from.

Beekeeping is no different. To be better beekeepers you must be able to look at YOUR loses and victories and into each battle. What battle you might ask. Simply what each beekeeper has always desired: health, growth, production, and survival with a splash of attitude. Splash of what? The Attitude best described as a combination of aggressiveness, mannerisms, defense, and cleanness.

As winter is ending, its time and some cases, past time to begin your journal. If you are one of the millions with a camera phone, use it as part of your documentation.

Your winter journal section should have two sections which I will cover in depth later, but for now: one comes the prep for winter, positions, and so on and the second the end of winter. Don't confuse the end of winter with the beginning of spring. The tasks are different and because of occasional cold spells, it's different.

So let's start:

Step one: If you aren't subscribing to a bee magazine, do so now. Not only will this broaden your understanding and knowledge of beekeeping, but this helps support the industry. Use the internet also if available. Remember, no person is an island.

Invest in a journal. Decide if the journal will be bound or not bound (notebooks). I suggest, not bound if you are going to be using or use a computer. Its easier to print articles, photos, and things then simply insert them into the appropriate areas. Taking notes by hand is better than taking notes electronically for quick information over the long term. Bound works best for bullet style journals, handwork, and startup, but also works for field notes if your apiary is distant. TIP: If you are going to use a handwritten ledger, use either a pencil or a pen with waterproof ink. If you don't you will lose your work and be very sad. You have been warned, don't repeat history.

You could also create separate notebooks for each module. The choice is yours. Today in our quick paced world a bullet journal might be your ticket to success.

Since we are starting this topic with the ending of winter lets move on to that section. Click HERE for that chapter. (in progress)

In the meantime, add N S E W to each side of each hive (use a thumbtack and letter) then take a picture of your apiary. Take photos as you open each hive box or component for inspection, dead bees? take a photo before you disturb them, weigh or count them. Can you imagine the CDC or WHO reporting a "bunch" died? Records become facts, facts become the foundation for solutions.

Note for each, is the queen there?, mites?, food? if food is still present is it near the cluster? weigh leftover food, mice?, bugs?, brood present?, nosema?, what level(s) was the cluster in? Insulated, how and with what? What exterior colors were used? Was there any pollen in the hive?

If this was a crime scene, be the detective. If not what do they need?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-43344683546926060532018-01-28T08:30:00.000-05:002018-01-28T11:01:28.441-05:00Bee hive exterior insulation

If you are using beehives with exterior insulation around all sides of your hive you should look back at history and beware.

Years ago, there was a time when hives with insulation became very popular and were used, you can see them on this site. These hives had double walls filled mainly with wood shavings but sometimes other materials. But you have to know WHY them came to be. During this time frame bees were often stored in the cellar during winter or special insulated buildings were being built. Neither of these approached were bleased. I'm not saying they did not work, only that they had labor and more issues. What happened?

Over time, beekeepers learned that the insulation was both a plus and a curse. The insulation did offer protection to the hive and the cluster, but it came at a high price. The insulated sides PREVENTED the bees from reacting to the changing weather. This is part of the reason black tar paper became popular.

Bees gain insight to the outside weather by the sun hitting the hive. Air flow temps does not effect them as one might think because air flow during winter is restricted and the ball of bees are not directly effected by it. The side of the hive being heated by the sun provides radiant heat that is FELT by the bees. You can see this both in winter and summer.

The bees in an insulated hive would often be tricked into cleansing flights only to find temps below 55 degrees which would then paralyzed them external to the hive, thus never returning. Sometimes it was the reverse, them not realizing the warmer weather had began, which lead to a late start.

So what to do:
Remove any external from the sunny side of your hive now (near end of winter). Adjust air flow (enlarge). Check for food stores, don't let them starve. If the hive is turned funny or wrong, turn it so the front faces the sun. If out of level, fix it. Check for availability of water, no water equals dead bees. If nosema is present, serve only white sugar with no additives.

There also are ways to make the cluster break, but that's another posting. Once the cluster breaks, food and water must be present or they will die in days. Watch out for breaks in winter of warm days.

Don't forget to get those wasp traps ready either. Consider raising quail or adjusting your chicken/fowl runs under your hives. If you are in a windy area, install some wind protection but not to close to the hives.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-76598483280536147602015-05-24T08:57:00.003-04:002015-05-24T12:03:17.628-04:00Government acts to help honeybees and PollinatorsA few years ago I explored the use of Federal land for beekeeping. It was a success, but was a bit of a hassle. The government may make more land available. It is worth a shot, you might be surprised, but hey don't get greedy and try to tank or block others.

It's not a new or a "brilliant" idea. Since this site often deals with good ideas long forgotten,

Beekeeping on federal land in fact it was at one time common practice under Land Management in the late 1800 and early 1900's. Like many things, a few people made trouble, the government got no money out of it and it passed from time. Just like the original "fake honey" cries that lead to laws against adulterated food. Who won that for all? BEEKEEPERS! But tell that to KFC or Popeye's next time you squeeze some "honey sauce" on your biscuits. Yea, that's right, fake honey, I don't eat it or support it.

Hey it only took a few years for them to act. Maybe when they saw all the flowers in Washington had no bees, maybe some bean counter finally put it together. Duh! What happened? Did the Obama hive crash? Were your bees giving Varrora a piggy back ride?

So, how much land are we talking about just on the "land" side?

All that aside, we thank you and your staff for the help.
Are Bumblebees living in the wild in the United Kingdom falling victim
to diseases and parasites from managed honeybees?

Research from the Royal Holloway University of London indicate that it is possible. Data was collected on a number of disorders, and the team looked at how
these diseases may migrate from managed populations of honeybees to wild
bumblebees. Fürst and his team found deformed wing virus (DWV) and
Nosema ceranae, a fungal parasite, could move between the groups.
Lifespans of bees contracting DWV is shortened from around three weeks
to two. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-14707270319068033482014-01-22T16:26:00.000-05:002014-11-02T14:19:54.848-05:00Beekeeping Links

It's that time again beeks. Your actions or inaction's over the next 90 days will have a key role in IF you have bees for next year. Starvation continues to be a huge problem. With the every changing climate you must prepare and act for changing weather.

Starting in no certain order:

An insulated top

Change to a heavier sugar syrup now. Time is running out for the extra water to evaporate.

Make the sugar blocks and any equipment needed to hold them. This is your insurance against an early spring or weird winter starvation event.

Cleanup the apiary.

Build the mouse and animal guards.

If your going to treat chemically, get busy.

Merge weak hives.

Insulate the hives. Top, bottom and sides, control wind.

Have water available during the winter. Many ways available.

Clean the bottom boards.

Order catalogs for next year and place your bee orders NOW.

Switch bottom board to elevated bottoms. This is old school, if you don't know how, leave a comment.

Start reducing the amount of outside accesses.

How deep is your snow? Adjust bottom boards accordingly.

Pull final honey harvest.

imported Italian and hybrid bees for his aviary. He sold the honey in
Chicago on Kinzie Street.

As the bees stopped production of
honey in the midwest's cooling fall season, he hit upon a unique
solution to produce honey year round: he put his beehives on a large
flat board boat and floated his aviary south on the Mississippi River.
The bees would continue to produce honey in the winter months as he
traveled south. By day, the bees would leave the boat's hives and seek
the southern flowers. At dusk, they returned to their hives on the boat
prior to nightfall. The boat traveled further south at night time with
the bees safely in their hives on board the vessel. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-61742113059095604342013-10-02T10:57:00.000-04:002013-10-04T11:03:26.727-04:00Jackass beesuit - No really

Rather than repeat it here, go to the site for some interesting reading. I myself have used those inexpensive digital units you buy in the stores with success.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-71062239042837292862013-09-16T11:26:00.000-04:002013-10-04T11:26:48.669-04:00Elevated bee hives with lifts

Note the use of the cams and lifting arms, attached to the "shelf". You can also see the wench (barely) in the lower right hand area at rear of the hives.

hot water bath. It is in the method that makes the difference.

Here's a german video so you can get the basic idea.

You will need:
2 - 5 gallon plastic buckets, like the type paint comes in (one for "broth", one for the wax)
2- spaghetti cooking pot or other large pot, one for boiling extra water, one for melting the comb which must be a junker.
A "fire" source, I used an old Coleman 2 burner camp stove
Junk combs
An additional water source (bucket or hose)
course netting, I used a 5 gallon net paint strainer, buy at home Depot
A large ladle or something like it, I used a 3 cup ladle

Here is what to do:

Take
one bucket and on one side, drill about a 3/4" hole about 2 inches from
the bottom. This will be our "broth" bucket.Do nothing to the second
bucket.

Test fit that your pots will seat correctly and safely on the heat source. VERY IMPORTANT.

Here is what we are going to be doing:
After
first adding water to both pots (1/2 full for our cooking/melting pot,
you need room to add comb, you can add more water later), bring both to
boiling.
Attach the netting to the broth bucket securely, very
important. It should not touch the floor of the bucket, half way is
good. Place the broth bucket on an elevated platform, so that liquids
can drain out of the drilled hole into the "wax" bucket. The wax bucket
must be slightly under the edge of the broth bucket. Test it. Pour some
cold water though the netting of the broth bucket, continue pouring
water till it flows out the drilled hole into the wax bucket. Did it
work? or do you have water on the floor? Move buckets as needed. drain
the water from the broth bucket, leave the cold water in the wax bucket.
Get the idea of placement?? You are going low tech.

Start:
Add
old combs to the melting pot. The water will turn blackish or brownish
(see below), the wax will start to melt coming to the top, crap will go
to the bottom. Stir some. When it "feels" all the wax has melted, use
the ladle and transfer the "broth" to the broth bucket, let the strainer
you installed do its job. Do not worry about the trash in the
strainer. As you continue to transfer the broth, at some point the
melted wax and water will come out of the drilled hole and drip into the
wax bucket. Add water from your clean water pot to the broth pot to
makeup what was ladeled out, add more comb and repeat. Remove debris
from melting pot as you ladle the broth.

Look
in the wax bucket. You will see that the wax is floating to the top,
water is underneath. When you are finished melting, let the wax bucket
set over night undisturbed. Next morning, dump the wax bucket and you
will have a round block of wax. On the bottom, there will be a thin
layer of debris, shave this off with a knife.

Mistakes:
Failure
to secure netting. The contents will be heavy, if you do not secure
this well, the debris and broth will be forced into the bottom of the
bucket and you will have a huge mess.
Failure to test the bucket drainage. You will have wax all over the place and a big mess. Use some newspapers as blotters.
Failure to do this outside. See above.
Failure to use two buckets for water. With no boiling water available it will take a lot longer.
Failure to be safe. This is boiling wax and water, if you are careless you could be severely burned. KEEP KIDS AWAY.

The photos are not mine, I included them to help make this process clearer for you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-63406967971719838872013-06-02T11:35:00.000-04:002013-10-04T11:36:02.256-04:00Stackable beehive

As spring rolls along here, I am still not seeing any bees. I am afraid that the wintering SHB, taking shelter in the clusters, did them in. Everywhere I go and even the images on the television are void of bees. This year I have only seen one honey bee outside.

What is everyone else seeing? As I drive the highways and look at the blooms on various plants, nothing, I'm not even seeing many bumble bees yet either. It's time to change the old ways and equipment. They were good when things were in harmony, but now, I think if we beekeepers continue to do as we have have done in the past our future will not be pretty.

Once at the turn of the 1900 century, a great battle took place in the states. Simply it was over fake or

adulterated honey and several bee diseases. That battle was won. However, have you checked your "honey" packets at KFC and Popeye's? You might find that you are supporting "honey syrup".

I for one don't read model T service manuals when I want to fix my 21st century car. That's not to say that they should be discarded, only that they should be read with a basis in mind only. Why do we think that the techniques developed in the 1800's and early 1900's still apply? The great founders of bee knowledge learned about bees and past that knowledge forward. Diseases they knew, pests not so much. Mites and hornets were the talk of the day. The difference is that these pests were after adult bees. The threats of today attack from the egg on up.

One last observation. Last year I noticed in a cut-out I was doing that the hive located in a second floor building was under attack by SHBs. How common is this? How long would they have survived? Wild bees are being affected also and given the current information, I don't think they will survive.

Maybe it's time for the agricultural departments to focus on Symbiote farming techniques. Start with the melon farmers that leave food wastes for the SHB to eat, promote that one group must help the other to control these cross-pests.

I suggest that if your loses are more than 30% you must find out why. For goodness sake, try something new, talk to other beekeepers and involve your self in your local chapters and clubs. If you have never been to a bee meeting or conference, maybe it's time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194705489884731230.post-10888689957230211842012-04-09T06:53:00.000-04:002012-04-09T06:53:03.517-04:00Winter 2011-2012 beehive loss survey

One way we as beekeepers can help other beekeepers is to share our experiences both good and bad. Each year as a group we have winter losses of hives. This information is tracked yearly and can be of many uses, but to have the results improve our craft we must participate in the collection of the data.

Recently, a more modern approach is available to collect this data. Take a few minutes of your time and step up and help. The annual winter survey is available here.
This was over time abandoned due to various reasons. Here is a classic pamphlet from the Unites States Department of Agriculture on the subject. Moisture was a common problem in cellars.
Today, most beekeepers winter their bees outdoors. There are various thoughts, designs, devices and treatments used depending on your location and local practice.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
